How To Write A Retro Game Review

As the days go by and the technology develops more and more, we realize how amazing some of the classic retro games were. Quirky pickups, let's repairs, retro and clone consoles, custom mods, handy tips, bargain ebay finds and the occasional vlog. The first two Monkey Island games were already classics when I played them the first time. Recent GNOME Games releases have (largely) focused on extending the app's core feature set, such as letting you configure controllers and keyboards , and adding support for more systems.

Retro games are generally simpler than modern titles. Accurate arcade conversions could now be created on these 16-Bit machines (such as Star Wars, Bubble Bobble and Arkanoid), and new and enhanced versions of 8-bit games were also created (such as Jet Set Willy).

The rise of game arcades coexisted with the emergence of home systems, with popular arcade hits Pac-Man, Missile Command, and Space Invaders repackaged for domestic consumption, becoming early successes for these platforms (Buchanan 2008). The release date of the PlayStation Classic holds a nostalgic value for Sony, which originally released the console in Japan on 3 December 1994.

Honestly, for many of the games I failed to understand how they were supposed to be played. The pros: Emulators are generally free to download, and most of them are pretty easy to set up. Emulators exist for nearly every classic video game console you can think of, as well as for most legacy microcomputer platforms.

Today, anybody who keeps up to date with the latest trends in gaming will likely know of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and the reputation these games have for punishing difficulty. The retro aspect has even spread to the way people buy their games. Some of the games are freemium, others are pay-once titles.

Despite the lack of Virtual Console, you could easily drop $1,000 or more on classic games on Switch thanks to Hamster's weekly Arcade Archives releases, Flying Tiger's Johnny Turbo-branded reissues and far too many others. I probably have somewhere between 200 - 300 physical games across a dozen consoles.

Thing is, my setup was actually made that ALL of those attic dwellers consoles were hooked to an old tube TV (like the good old days!), ready to be played at the flick of a switchbox. The game that launched the career of a certain plumber, Nintendo's 1981 arcade hit was pivotal.
